When Tides Tell Tales – Exploring the Stories of the Scottish Selkies (B1/B2)

Traditionally, the northern and western regions of Scotland have been home to the Atlantic grey seal, an aquatic mammal that has long served as a powerful symbol of cultural identity and of distant, otherworldly realms. With its remarkable ability to move effortlessly between sea and shore, the seal has become deeply woven into the fabric of Scotland’s myths and legends. Within these storytelling traditions, it is endowed with a unique form of shapeshifting magic, transforming into the mysterious “Selkie.”
In this course, we will listen to and explore a range of Selkie stories told by native Scottish voices. Together, we will examine the characters, plots, symbols, and deeper meanings.
